The lid is notched so the spoon stays in the jar with the lid closed - no cutlery left on the table, no crust forming on the surface of the mustard.
At 400ml it holds a good deal more than a mustard pot usually does, which makes it equally useful for sugar or anything else that gets reached for at the table rather than the hob. Fine bone china, so it goes from the cupboard to a laid table without looking out of place.
