Have only used it once but seems to be doing the trick. I agree with the other reviewer, an instruction guide or at least a link to the video on your website would have been appreciated with this product.
Thanks JH. There is a video on the product page showing the technique, and we email a sharpening guide to anyone who's opted in - but granted, they're easy to miss. We are changing the packaging so a link is on there. Much appreciated feedback.
The whetstone seems to be good, I have only used it once, the knife is sharper. However, it would have been very helpful to have been supplied with instructions for its use, or at least a link to the online video, which I found when I searched for some guidance. I have never used one before and really did not know how to use it. As it is quite complicated - I would never have guessed that it required soaking in water for half an hour before use - it is surprising that you do not supply some information.
Thank you for the review - and you make a fair point. A whetstone isn't obvious the first time, and soaking it for half an hour before use is exactly the kind of thing nobody would guess.
We do have a full guide, with a video from our founder: it's under 'care & seasoning' at the bottom of our website, titled 'How to sharpen a knife with a whetstone'. We also email it to customers when they order - but only if they've opted in to hearing from us at checkout, which means it doesn't reach everyone. That's something for us to think about, because instructions shouldn't depend on a tickbox.
Glad the knife is sharper. It only gets easier from here.
I’ve seen whetstones more expensive than this. My concern is that yours maybe wears so that it is no longer flat to be able to sharpen knives consistently. Can you please comment and tell me how you would deal with a query such as that if I buy it? Thank you.
We’ve seen whetstones at much higher prices, so it’s a fair question to ask what you're getting - and whether it will last.
Ours is part of our own-brand range, which tends to be considerably more affordable than the top-spec equivalents, as we don't pay a middle-man or spend much on marketing, packaging, etc. We use this whetstone regularly for the cooking videos we share with our customers, and haven’t yet needed to resurface it.
That said, everyone’s setup is different. The need to re-flatten can depend on how often you sharpen, the hardness of your knives and your sharpening technique. With that in mind, we’ve ordered in some resurfacing tools - they’ll be available on our website in the next few months, likely around £10. If you'd like us to let you know when they arrive, please just drop us a line at hello@seasoncookshop.co.uk
How often would you expect to sharpen your knife like this for general domestic use? (MARVELLOUS video, thank you!)
How often a knife needs sharpening depends on the type of knife, the hardness of the steel, and how frequently it’s used. For general domestic use, most knives benefit from regular honing to maintain the edge after every few uses, while a full sharpen on a whetstone might only be needed every few months. Harder steel knives hold their edge longer, so they require sharpening less often.
A simple way to check if your knife needs sharpening is the tomato test: a sharp knife should slice cleanly through a tomato’s skin without squashing the fruit. If it struggles, it’s a good indication that a sharpen is due.
Is this a waterstone or oil stone?
It is water stone.
